Workers' Compensation Insurance

Rice University maintains workers' compensation insurance coverage to protect all faculty, staff, students, and volunteers injured during the course and scope of their normal employment. For more information about this policy, who it applies to, payment for lost time and medical benefits, restricted duty/light duty, and return to work, please refer to Workers Compensation Policy 407.

How To Report A Claim

Employees or students who sustain a work-related injury or illness must report it to their supervisor as soon as possible. The Injury/Illness Form(s) must be completed by the supervisor with the employee, and submitted to the Workers' Compensation Specialist within 24 hours of the incident.

If the incident involves hazardous material, chemicals, or occurs in a laboratory, submit a SciShield Incident Report to EHSLO in addition to the Injury/Illness Form.

Report life-threatening, catastrophic, or injuries involving multiple parties immediately 24/7 by calling Travelers at 800-832-7839.

For an injury or illness that occurs outside of the country, please have the employee complete the Foreign Work Injury/Illness Report. That report can be located here.

Employees may seek treatment with any provider who accepts Workers' Compensation. For your convenience, links to providers commonly used by our employees are provided below:

Concentra clinics are full-service medical facilities that provide healthcare services for workers' compensation injuries and transportation to/from any of their locations. To avoid any potential delays in treatment, please present your ID badge. You can find a clinic here and reach out to the location directly to schedule a pickup. Concentra transportation services generally operate within a 25-mile radius of their medical centers.

Concentra Telemed® offers virtual care, available 24/7 for your convenience. Connect with clinicians for minor injuries and follow-up care by logging in or creating an account at Concentra Telemed®.

UT Health Services is conveniently located in the Texas Medical Center. To schedule an appointment, please call 713-500-3267. Employees will need to their claim number when scheduling an appointment. For additional information, please visit their website by clicking here.

Next Level Urgent Care offers extended weekday and weekend hours at multiple locations throughout the Houston area, as well as virtual care. A Treatment Authorization Form is required at check-in. Memorial Hermann GoHealth Urgent Care offers 28 convenient locations across the Houston area. To continue care with Memorial Hermann, you will need to continue treatment at one of their Occupational Health clinics in Sugar Land, Katy, or Cypress.

Travelers Insurance

Travelers serves as our insurance carrier and third-party claims administrator for all Workers' Compensation claims that occur in the United States for Rice University. A representative from Travelers will reach out to you and assist in processing your claim.

Zurich Insurance

Zurich serves as our insurance carrier and third-party claims administrator for all Workers' Compensation claims that occur outside of the United States for Rice University. A representative from Zurich will reach out to you and assist in processing your claim.

Texas Workers Compensation Act

For more information about the Texas Workers Compensation Act, please refer to the Division of Workers Compensation at the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) website at https://www.tdi.texas.gov/wc/employee/index.html.

The Office of Injured Employee Counsel (OIEC) is a state agency that provides free assistance to injured employees with workers' compensation claims. If you do not have an attorney and want help from an ombudsman, contact OIEC at 866-393-6432, ext. 44186.

Please be advised that any claim found to be fraudulent may be denied and may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
