Staff and Faculty

Complete these three steps to apply for accommodations:

Step One: Online Application

ADA assist

Rice University has teamed up with Unum to bring you access to Unum ADA Assist – a simple and secure online tool designed to help you easily and securely request an ADA accommodation. You can learn more about ADA Assist by reviewing the Employee FAQs.

To request an accommodation, visit https://adaassist.unum.com.

If you are unable to sign up, please get in touch with facstaffada@rice.edu.

Step Two: Current Documentation

As part of the application linked above, staff should upload current supporting documentation from their medical provider to their file.

This comprehensive guide outlines the information needed to complete the file. Feel free to share this guide with your medical provider to ensure all supporting documents are provided.

Step Three: Interactive Process

Once you have submitted the application and documentation, Human Resources may want to speak with you to understand your request better. This conversation is designed to explore your disability narrative and the barriers you are encountering. It is also a time to discuss implementing accommodations and engaging with your department.

In most cases, staff and faculty may expect written communication from HR within 5 to 10 business days of completing the application and documentation. This communication will include either an eligibility letter, a request for more information, instructions on next steps, or a denial.

Once approved for accommodations:

  • The employee receives an accommodation letter with detailes outlining the desicion.
  • Other appropriate documentation
